Music Review: 打首獄門同好会 (Uchikubi Gokumon Doukoukai)

I found this band during my search for Japanese bands with basic lyrics that I could hope to understand. Imagine my luck when I found this gem.

打首獄門同好会, also known as Prison Fighting Club, or Beheaded Prison Club (I’m not a translator), is a three member band consisting of lead singer and guitarist Osawa Atsushi, drummer and vocalist Kamimoto Asuka, and bass and vocalist Junko.

So needless to say I fell in love with this band pretty quickly. And while I can’t understand a good portion of most of their songs, I’m happy that they use pretty basic Japanese and keep the songs fun.

I mean who can’t relate to not wanting to work, eating meat and Japanese rice!? I mean besides hard working vegans who are also on keto? But seriously it’s nice to have finally found a Japanese band I can really enjoy. They’ve got a great beat, hilarious lyrics, and really interesting music videos. It’s hard to really say which genres they belong to, but maybe something between rock, punk, heavy metal and comedy. It’s also hard to say which of the three I enjoy the most. Osawa has a cool punk voice, but I think I actually prefer Junko and Kamimoto’s back up vocals. Their sound is also really interesting as Osawa uses a 7-string guitar and Junko uses a 5-string bass. Maybe that’s part of what makes them stick out compared to other bands?

You know it’s actually kinda sad that I don’t have more to say about this band. The language barrier is definitely a bit of hurdle, but I think I would listen to them even if I weren’t trying to learn Japanese. I don’t know, I just really wanted to share this awesome group as they don’t seem really well known. So uhh please check them out! ^_^
